Howdy. How in the heck is everyone? Can you believe 2022 is almost in the rear-view mirror? We don’t spend too, too much time here at TIKI reflecting back on the past, but seeing as this is the time of year where fittingly checking the rearview is normal and encouraged, we’ll do a bit of that really quickly:

2022 was nuts. We settled in to a brand new city (well, Mike and Shane did at least), met some incredible new people, build our own custom TIKI bar, started our own podcast, had our first in-office interns, built some powerful and innovative technology, packed that technology up and pivoted our product strategy toward an SDK, built and released said SDK, had some emotionally charged adventures in Investor Land, added two new faces to the team, and this is just recapping some of the major events off the top of my head.

Thanks for reading TIKI! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

Everything was fast in 2022, just like 2021 was fast, but…faster. The initial stages of 2023 are going to be the fastest and most critical yet. So without further ado, let’s dig in to what’s happened since November and what we plan on achieving as the calendar turns to 2023.

Enjoy what we’re doing at TIKI? The TIKI Newsletter has the biggest reach and most engagement of anything we post. If you’re a fan of what we’re doing, consider sharing this post to others you think may enjoy it, helping the data ownership movement grow!

Nov. Recap and Dec. Outlook
It’s been almost 2 months since my last investor update, I aim for monthly, but we’ve been heads-down building product. So apologies, sort of. There’s no better feeling and nothing more important than shipping great product. To this end, November was a smashing success. Team spirits are high; it was the unprompted theme of our Friday sprint retrospectiv…

Let’s take a trip through time as Mike reflects back on November and looks forward to December and beyond. This was sent out to all TIKI investors, but also available for anyone to read. Transparency, the TIKI way!

How TIKI works
At the time of writing, the front page of our website says: Decentralized infrastructure to create private, safe, and compliant data transactions between people and businesses. Let’s break that down to what it really means (skip to the techy stuff…

Development Roadmap: Dec. '22
Keep in mind that the roadmap will inevitably change almost immediately after I hit publish. Projects always take longer than expected, and as developers, our eyes tend to be bigger than our stomachs. If you would like to get involved and help contribute, join us on Discord…

Are you curious like a cat? Consider being called a “nerd” a top-tier compliment? Then maybe Mike’s blog “How TIKI works” will suit your fancy. They often say, it’s not the wand, it’s the wizard, so no better to learn a magic spell than from the source! (In this metaphor Mike is a wizard, for reference, in case you didn’t catch that. You did? Okay, I’ll show myself out.)

And if anticipation is your cup of tea, allow for Mike to indulge you with the most recent development roadmap. That’s a solid 3-pack of the Mike content we all know and love.

Survey Says…Keep it Classic!

It was a tightly contested battle in which a non-zero amount (35) of people voted on the fate of our YouTube channel banner. The designs came courtesy of our very own Vignesh, and I’d imagine that watching them duke it out in the public forum is sort of like when those two sports parents have sons on the same pro teams playing each other for the first time, except for, like, they’re YouTube banners and there’s, like, 15 of them. ANYDANGWAY, the classic block text look prevailed, proving once again that innovate, innovate, innovate doesn’t extend to logos. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken.

That doesn’t apply to making the channel look overall better, though. And make it look better we did. Now videos are broken into full episodes, clips (over 1 minute) and Shorts (under 1 minute). We’re emphasizing Shorts in the beginning of 2023 and uploading is a constant process, but keep your eyes peeled for lots of YouTube content to round out 2022 and even more in 2023. Shane’s got some interesting ideas planned, including writing about himself in the third person (less).

Block Logo Supremacy. Check out the new YT digs!

Operation Inform and Entertain

The podcast took a mini-hiatus as we recorded some Shorts-form content, FAQs, and blogs for the new website, but we’ve returned with a couple of great episodes. Check out Episode 39 for the internal TIKI updates, and listen in on Episode 40 for the continuation of our guest series, with Retalk’s Pete Zaborszky! With quite a few guests lined up for 2023, let’s see if we can get to Episode 100 by this time next year!

The Pride of Dublin, Blockchain Barry

It’s been a big month for the Barrymeister with lots of quality content hitting the digital shelves. Blockchain Barry digs into decentralization in depth. Do indulge. Posthaste. Do they say that in Ireland? I don’t know.

Mitigating Risk of a Potential DAO 51% Attack
A 51% attack, also known as a majority attack, occurs when a single person or group gains control of over 50% of a blockchain’s hashing power. That was achieved by renting mining hash power from a third party. However, a 51% attack is theoretically limited in the disruption it can cause. While the attacker could…

What is Web 3.0?
I was out last night for a seasonal catch-up with some friends, and they saw something I had posted on Web 3.0. The three of them asked me, “What the fuck is Web 3.0?”. So, I thought I would write something to explain it. Like all these things, we need to look at how we got here first, so let’s look at the previous versions…

Innovating with Dart

We’re doing some very cool things with the Dart language that we quickly learned not many others are doing. There wasn’t much informational content at all on the web about it, so we filled that void with the Ricardo Gonçalves and Mike Audi series. A cool look into an efficient way of building. Rock on, Ricardo and Mike!

How to Call Dart from Android or iOS Native Code
Imagine discovering an awesome Dart library… the tiki-sdk-dart library, for example (which is both awesome and in Dart). If you want to use that library in an Android or iOS app, the no-brainer solution is to create/add it to a Flutter app. Then use Flutter to compile the entire app to native platform code…

How to Package Dart Code for Use as a Native Library
I explained in a previous blog post how to call Dart code from native code in Android and iOS, leveraging Flutter’s Platform Channels. The approach is simple and works well when you are using your own libraries or have the Flutter SDK set up while also developing native code. But it starts to get tricky when you go to distribute your code for other deve…

How to Package Dart for Use as a Native Android Library
This post builds on the previous post about how to package a Dart library using Flutter. In this blog we cover creating a fat-aar, adding-in dynamic link libraries (dlls), and publishing to a Maven Repository. The goal is to create a dependency an Android developer can drop into their existing project via a single-line standard…

How to Package Dart for Use as a Native iOS Library
In a previous post, we described how to use Flutter to make a Dart library accessible from iOS native code. Now we want to take that library and redistribute it as a native library for iOS apps. Sounds simple, but things can get tricky. The typical approach for iOS library distribution is…

One Year in Music City, USA
Just over one year ago, on the 2nd of December, 2021, Mike and I packed up a U-Haul truck in suburban Boston, drove it up to the Saratoga Springs area of New York and packed it up some more, then headed for our new home: Nashville, Tennessee. Yee-haw. Sort of…
